[Decorating Ideas] Grow Bamboo Indoors

How to Grow Bamboo Indoors

6 Easy Steps to Success !

Bamboo - Coasters - Tile Art

Bamboo Leaves • Tile Art • ©Painting by Jacobson

A great indoor plant that you can grow in your home.

Bamboo is easy to care for, and is great for interior spaces with dim natural light.

With these simple steps, you can brighten up your home with healthy plants.

Growing Instructions

  1. Buy a healthy bamboo chute. Bamboo will grow its own new roots, so you just need to make sure you choose a chute that’s a healthy shade of light green – neither yellow nor dark green
  2. Choose an interesting transparent container to keep your plant. That way you can see the roots!  Choose a container that’s an appropriate size and shape for your chute

  3. To keep the bamboo standing up, add pebbles, glass marbles, or stones to the container. You can get creative and combine  it with the design of your home!

  4. Make sure that your bamboo is kept with 2-3 inches of the stem submerged in water. Unlike some other plants, bamboo likes to take root in a few inches of water constantly in order to grow and be healthy. You cannot over water the plant! Refill the water as necessary to keep it at this level.

  5. Find a home in your home for the plant. Bamboo likes filtered sunlight, not direct sunlight. I  keep mine in my bathroom, which doesn’t get a lot of light.

  6. Keep tabs on your plant. If it starts to wilt, move it to a place with more light. Make sure the water level is high enough. And lastly, enjoy!

[Decorating Ideas] Walls

Wall Decorating Ideas and Tips

No Matter What Your Decorating Style

“How do I decorate my walls?” sends some people into a panic

After selecting the furnishings and accessories for a room or space, wall decorations can complete the look in a spectacular way.

No need to stress out over wall decor…just follow this process and the ideas presented here…you’ll be fine!

3 Tips for Adding Wall Decor

Wall Decorating Ideas : Tip 1  make sure that your walls themselves are in order.

Do they need …

some color?

decorative trim such as crown molding?

practical trim such as shoe molding?

a really good cleaning?

Take a good long look and make sure your walls are ready for those decorations..

Wall Decorating Ideas : Tip 2 – have a good sense of your decorating style for this space

For example, if contemporary home decor speaks to you, then you will definitely utilize the ‘less is more’ strategy for your wall decor.

You might select one dramatic piece of art for the focal point wall in the room.

“It doesn’t have to be an expensive original to be great. I do prints of my great original artwork!

Does traditional style more aptly define your lifestyle and preferences?

Your wall decor might include collections of pretty plates, floral prints and whitewashed wall vases with flowing greenery.

The point is, make sure that your wall decor is consistent with the rest of your room and home.

Wall Decorating Ideas : Tip 3What is the function of the room itself?

This may seem obvious, but sometimes we get caught up in how much we adore a particular picture, for example, and forget about the space it is going into.

If your wall decorating ideas are for the kitchen, for example, make sure they are appropriate for the space.

Just make sure that your selection is compatible with the room function, fits the color palette for the space as well as the decorating style you have chosen.

Tips for placement of your wall decorations:

1. Please, please don’t ‘hang ’em high’!

You and your guests should not have to look toward the ceiling to see the awesome artwork in the living room.

Place your artwork, collectibles, photos, etc. just a shade above eye level for the average height adult.

2. Take your artwork and hang it lower than stated in tip #1 and you can create a number of different and unique looks.

For example, if you have a nightstand in the bedroom with a lamp on it, hang your picture so that the bottom of the artwork is about 3 to 4 inches below the top of, and to the side of, the lamp. By doing this you are creating a visual tie between the artwork, the lamp and the table.

A collection of four prints, for example, can create a border above in a multi-surface area.

Try this as a ‘headboard’ in your guest bedroom!

Coasters - Seashells

SeaShells • Collection • © Jacobson

3. Too much adornment on the walls • Makes you dizzy to look at them?

You don’t have to, and should not, place something on every inch of open wall space in your home.

The result is a cluttered and unappealing mess.

4. Do you like collections?

Use your imagination! If you have a large wall space that needs help, try using varying shapes and sizes of:

Mural - Tile Art- Plumeria

Plumeria • Tile Art Mural • ©Jacobson

  • mirrors
  • vintage picture frames (just the frames – work well on a wall with color)
  • wall tiles
  • wrought iron accents, or
  • frame recipes, favorite songs or hymns, children’s artwork, vintage hankies

Have fun with your new wall decorating ideas.

About Bamboo…

Giant bamboos are the largest members of the grass family.

Bamboo is the fastest growing woody plant in the world. In a single day, a bamboo plant can grow an average of up to 23.6 inches, and certain species have been measured to grow as much as 47.6 inches in one 24-hour period. However, bamboo is not a type of wood, but a type of grass. It grows most abundantly in the East and Southeast Asian regions of the world, but it can also be found in Northern Australia, India, sub-Saharan Africa and the tropical regions of the Americas.

Aside from being used as building material for many centuries bamboo has also had major cultural significance in countries like China, where bamboo is a symbol of longevity. Japan’s Shinto religion makes use of bamboo as a sacred object. Bamboo forests often surround Shinto shrines and are believed to serve as barriers against evil spirits. Buddhist temples often have bamboo groves, as they create a peaceful and meditative setting.

Why is it called Lucky Bamboo

Along with its ease of growth, Lucky Bamboo has long been associated with the Eastern practice of Feng Shui – or the bringing of natural elements of water, fire, earth, wood and metal into balance within the environment. Lucky Bamboo is believed to be an ideal example of the thriving wood and water element, with the addition of a red ribbon sometimes tied around the stalks – which is believed to “fire” the positive flow of energy or chi in the room.

The number of stalks also has meaning : three stalks for happiness; five stalks for wealth; six stalks for health. Four stalks, however, are always avoided since the word “four” in Chinese sounds too similar to the Chinese word for “death”!

Growth and Harvesting

Bamboo has become a popular eco-friendly alternative to using hardwood as building material. Because of its rapid growth and short life-cycle, bamboo is one of the most renewable natural resources in the world, and it can be harvested on a regular basis without causing significant damage to its surrounding ecosystem.

Unlike hardwoods, bamboo plants achieve their full height and girth in just one growing season, which lasts between three and four months.

Uses

Bamboo has a wide variety of uses. From construction to cooking, it has been a part of human culture and consumption for centuries. Another very common use for bamboo today is as a decorative tool. Small bamboo plants are becoming very popular in western interior design, and Asian cultures have been using it to decorate rooms and altars for centuries.

How is the Tile Art Made?

Dye sublimation is the process used to decorate the ceramic coaster, using The Tile Master™ heat press. Epson Inkjet printers and sublimation inks print the transfers used to sublimate the tile coasters with unique artwork by Jackie Jacobson.

The one absolute requirement of this process is that the tiles must have a polymer coating on them. When a tile is decorated using the sublimation process the image is transferred into the polymer coating and actually becomes a part of it.

The tile art coasters are manufactured in the Jackie Jacobson Studios in the Palm Springs area. Stop by the studios for a tour of the tile art production.

My inspiration came from the recent addition of  tile art coasters .  Bamboo … the greens, browns and subtle golds, enhance today’s home decor fashion colors.

More About Bamboo…

Bamboo Growth and Harvesting

Bamboo has become a popular eco-friendly alternative to using hardwood as building material. Because of its rapid growth and short life-cycle, bamboo is one of the most renewable natural resources in the world, and it can be harvested on a regular basis without causing significant damage to its surrounding ecosystem.

Unlike hardwoods, bamboo plants achieve their full height and girth in just one growing season, which lasts between three and four months.

Uses of Bamboo

Bamboo has a wide variety of uses. From construction to cooking, it has been a part of human culture and consumption for centuries. Another very common use for bamboo today is as a decorative tool. Small bamboo plants are becoming very popular in western interior design, and Asian cultures have been using it to decorate rooms and altars for centuries.
