Phoenix Art Museum – “Paper”

“An art exhibit worth exploring”

Art Review by Jackie Jacobson

The Phoenix Art Museum’s Art exhibit

The museum took an artist’s drawing material and made it the theme of an art exhibit.

Drawing - Mary Cassatt

The material PAPER.

  • Included in the show
  • Works of art drawn, printed, or painted on paper
  • Paper as the subject of the artwork
  • Used as the material for three dimensional work such as paper dresses to metal representations

And here’s the piece of art that attracted me to this show for today’s art review.

Art Review - Derain - Still Life
Art Review : André Derain, Still Life, 1933.
Gouache (also known as opaque watercolor)
on newspaper mounted on canvas. 24½” x 33¾”.
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Donald D. Harrington.

Newsprint for drawing

Most drawing instructors assign newsprint pads of paper as the support paper for quick sketches from the live model.

I assign NEWSPAPERS such as the classified section as an incredible surface for drawings.

And that makes it pretty cheap for a drawing material. But we better start saving them before Newspapers disappear from our planet.

Derain Painting in the Art Exhibit

Painting - Derain - Still Life

In this painting by Derain, note that the the headlines and text are still visible in the work. It definitely adds to the interest of the   piece. It was probably painted as a quick study and then mounted on canvas to preserve it

André Derain, French (1880-1954), was a contemporary and friend of Picasso and Matisse, and one of the artists of the Fauvist movement. He might never have enjoyed the success he did as an artist if it hadn’t been for Matisse convincing Derain’s parents to allow him to abandon his studies in engineering and pursue art. This piece, from 1933, is a gouache (also known as opaque watercolor) on newspaper, the headlines and text of which are still visible in the work.

The Phoenix Art Museum is the Southwest United States’ largest art museum for visual art. It’s Located in Phoenix, Arizona, the museum is 285,000-square-foot. It’s a mere 4 hour drive from here in The Palm Springs area and will definitely be on my schedule of short trips this summer.

Hello Jackie, How wonderful of you to to bring so much to us via the internet. Who would of thought life could be so expansive right at home? Any I love the Picasso video and the narration. Great to have shapes, etc. pointed out. The Illusion, is still and illusion to me and looks incredible. I don’t think it is my calling……yet. The still life on newspaper — very cool. And did not realize the the Phoenix Art Museum is so large. Keep me posted as to when you are going. Be well, Andrea

Really enjoyed this. Good combination of educational and inspirational material. Loved the segment on the Illusion painting. Has intrigued me for some time. Thanks for your continued work on your site.
