David Goldberg turns hardware into Mural art
Mural of knobs and levers is a reimagining of “Starry Night” in Bethesda MD

Hardware owner David Goldberg created a mural that looks like Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night” using door hardware.
Although most people wouldn’t see beauty in a doorknob, David Goldberg has always viewed hardware as works of art. So to convince the nonbelievers, Goldberg used more than 1,250 elements of door hardware to piece together a mural of Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting “Starry Night” outside Union Hardware in Bethesda.
“There are no fans of decorative artwork in hardware,” says Goldberg, who owns the upscale hardware store on Wisconsin Avenue. “I need to ride on the coattails of the art world.”
Because he wanted the outdoor mural to stand up to the weather, Goldberg chose a base of PVC — a plastic commonly used in piping — and dyed a special primer to the various colors he used to paint the background. He then bolted the levers, knobs and back plates to the plastic sheets.
But prior to the version that can been seen on the street today, Goldberg did an entire first-draft on a wood base while he perfected the positioning of the hundreds of elements of hardware. The labor of love took four months.
Having no prior art experience, Goldberg relied on his intimate knowledge of the materials and love of design when working to recreate the painting.
“When I look at this, I see levers,” Goldberg says, pointing to the swirling brush strokes of the van Gogh original.
The original van Gogh piece, located in New York City’s Museum of Modern Art, is one of the most famous examples of post-impressionism. Goldberg dubbed his methods “post-door hardwareism” and is quickly becoming famous in his own right. Not only has his business picked up, but photos of the mural have been circulating on the Internet, gaining praise from industry professionals around the world.
“My industry is so enamored with the reactions that we get,” he says.
